BRASILIA, Feb 25 (Reuters) - Adidas on Tuesday acceded to a request from Brazil's tourism board, which said the sporting goods maker should stop selling two T-shirts it marketed ahead of this year's World Cup because  they encourage sexual tourism.

One shirt shows a bikini-clad woman with open arms on a sunny Rio de Janeiro beach under the word-play "Looking to Score." The other has an "I love Brazil" heart resembling the upside-down buttocks of a woman wearing a thong bikini bottom.

Adidas said the shirts would not be sold anymore, adding in a statement that they were from a limited edition that was only on sale in the United States.

The shirt designs touched a nerve in Brazil, where people often complain about foreign stereotypes of Brazilian sensuality. They also irked Brazil's government, which is campaigning aggressively to shed the country's reputation as a destination for sex tourism.

Tourism board Embratur said it contacted Adidas  to ask the German multinational to pull the shirts from its stores.

"Embratur strongly repudiates the sale of products that link  Brazil's image to sexual appeal," it said in a statement.

The shirts went on sale in Adidas shops in the United States at a time when Brazil is preparing to host the World Cup soccer tournament, which kicks off on June 12.

President Dilma Rousseff said Brazil would crack down on sex tourism and the exploitation of children and adolescents during the Cup, which is expected to draw 600,000 foreign fans..

The German company, the world's second-largest sporting goods manufacturer, later announced it would withdraw the T-shirts. “We always listen carefully to our customers and other stakeholders, so having taken on board their feedback, we have made the decision to withdraw this product line,” adidas said in a statement emailed to DPA. “It is important to stress that this was a limited edition range which was only available in the US.”

The 25-year-old is powering Watford's promotion bid, and is Nigeria's leading scorer in Europe. Are the Super Eagles' striking worries over? Bet 5$10$20$50$100$= MIL Draw WAT COMMENT    By Solace Chukwu     Follow on TwitterA lot has been made of the lack of balance in the Super Eagles midfield, and it is a headache Stephen Keshi had to contend with all through the period of his time in charge of the team. However, at his exit (or hiatus, if you will), there has arisen another pain: a paucity of striking options. It seemed a foible of Samson Siasia’s stewardship that the team was brimming wi…

Sports Verdict    By Prof Patrick Omo-Osagie      Follow on Twitter   When I wrote about the failures of the English Premier League teams in Europe, I was not thinking of writing or investigating why Nigerian clubs are failing on the African continent. But with the ouster of our two teams in the Caf Champions League this past weekend, I am obliged to look into this consistent failure of our clubs on the continent. A little background will help us understand our football plight in Africa; for a competition that started in 1964, Nigerian teams have been to the finals seven times. Two wins by Eny…
